Barcelona defensive blow: García out, Koundé doubtful for Clásico
Barcelona defensive blow: García out, Koundé doubtful for Clásico

Barcelona face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting Real Madrid in the Clásico on 25 October, with two defenders now unavailable for the first fixture. Eric García has a right-thigh rectus femoris injury and is expected to miss three to four weeks, ruling him out of both matches, while Jules Koundé has a left-ankle sprain and will miss PSG. His availability for the Clásico remains uncertain, according to MARCA and Barcelona’s official medical update.

The timeline leaves Hansi Flick without García for a run of fixtures, while Koundé’s recovery will determine whether he can return against Real Madrid. The Frenchman has become a regular option on the right side of Barcelona’s defence; his role in Flick’s side is discussed in this account of Koundé’s Barcelona role.

Both players underwent medical examinations after Barcelona returned from Seville. García had left the 5-2 win over Real Betis before the final whistle after feeling discomfort; tests identified the muscle injury. Koundé was seen limping after the flight back, and examinations confirmed the ankle sprain.

Barcelona’s club update gave García an estimated recovery period of three to four weeks and said Koundé would miss the Paris match. It left the Frenchman’s return date open, with his progress to determine whether he could face Madrid.

Gerard Martín’s condition offers a possible option

Gerard Martín was also substituted at half-time against Betis after taking a knock, but MARCA reported that he did not need medical tests and was expected to be available for PSG. The short recovery window, however, means his condition remains a consideration ahead of Tuesday’s match.

The confirmed injuries leave Barcelona with a defensive selection decision for Paris, but the reports do not establish who will replace García or Koundé. ESPN noted that both had featured at right-back this season and outlined possible alternatives, though no replacement had been confirmed in the available reporting.

With the PSG fixture on Tuesday and the Clásico on Sunday, Koundé’s recovery is the immediate uncertainty for the second match. García’s absence, by contrast, is already expected to extend beyond both fixtures and into the following weeks.
