Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ready for Man Utd return if Michael Carrick is sacked
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ready for Man Utd return if Michael Carrick is sacked

Former Manchester United manager,  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has admitted he is keen to return to the club  with current coach Michael Carrick under pressure.

Following their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, Manchester United have dropped to 17th place in the Premier League table, sitting just above 18th-placed Crystal Palace on goal difference and only two points clear of bottom-placed Sunderland.

Pressure is mounting on current head coach Michael Carrick as the Red Devils' dismal season continues to go from bad to worse.

The Norwegian previously worked alongside Carrick, who was part of his backroom staff before he was dismissed as United manager in November 2021. Following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January, both men were interviewed for the interim managerial role, but Carrick was ultimately selected.

Speaking about taking the reins at United in the future, Solskjaer revealed he would accept it.

'Going back to what has been is not always as good,' he told Norwegian outfit TV2.

'Yes, I had lined up [as Manchester United's interim manager last season], but I didn't think it would last longer than the summer. It was probably time for someone else to try.

'I also feel like I have something unresolved. Of course it would have been nice to have the opportunity again.'

Elaborating further, Solskjaer was keen to stress that he is not looking to oust his former United team-mate and friend Carrick.

'If Michael does well for 10 years and decides to quit, and they ask me if I can take them for two months, of course I wouldn't say no. I've been at that club for 18-19 years, so it's part of the family. But it's not something I'm thinking about.'

Despite mounting pressure on Carrick, Solskjaer remains confident that the embattled coach can revive the club’s fortunes.

'Michael has what it takes to take that club forward. I think he's the right man. He understands the club, understands the fans and knows what's needed.'
