Michael Carrick apologises to Manchester United fans after ‘unacceptable’ Champions League performance

Michael Carrick has once again apologised for his team's performance.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has apologised to supporters following his side’s disappointing Champions League performance against Como, admitting the display was “unacceptable”.

United travelled to Italy under pressure after a run of six matches without a win, but their latest European outing left Carrick frustrated once more.

The former United midfielder accepted full responsibility for the performance and insisted there could be no excuses for what his players produced.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Carrick delivered a damning assessment of his team’s display.

“It was more than disappointing. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that,” he said.

“I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance – that’s where it stops. It stops with me and I’m absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally.

“But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say.”

Manchester United boss apologises to travelling supporters

Carrick was particularly disappointed for the United fans who had travelled to Italy to support their team.

The 45-year-old stressed the importance of the club’s supporters and admitted he felt compelled to apologise for what they had witnessed.

“I care an unbelievable amount about the supporters,” Carrick said.

“They are the heartbeat of this football club and they always will be. For them to travel, I had to apologise for the performance.

“To have to watch a performance like that, I totally feel for them. There are no excuses at all. It is not acceptable.”

With pressure mounting over his position, Carrick was also asked whether he still had the backing of Manchester United’s board.

However, he refused to discuss his own future, insisting his immediate focus was on assessing the performance.

“It’s not about me. It’s about digesting the game and how it went. That is the most important thing right now.”
