UEFA Champions League matchday 4: Only Real Madrid, PSG maintain perfect records

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have emerged as the only two teams with 100 per cent records in the 2026/2027 UEFA Champions League league phase after winning all their opening four matches.

The two European heavyweights maintained their unbeaten runs following victories in the fourth round of fixtures, which concluded on Wednesday, November 4, leaving them jointly at the top of the standings with 12 points each.

Paris Saint-Germain occupy first position on goal difference, while Real Madrid are second, with both clubs establishing themselves as early contenders for direct qualification to the round of 16, blueprint reports.

PSG strengthened their position with a commanding 6-0 away victory over Villarreal on Tuesday, while Real Madrid had to work harder to secure a 3-2 win against AEK Athens in Greece on Wednesday.

The results mean both clubs have collected the maximum 12 points available from their opening four matches, separating themselves from the rest of the competition.

PSG’s attacking form puts pressure on rivals

Defending champions PSG have been particularly impressive in front of goal, scoring 20 times and conceding just five in their first four league-phase matches.

Their campaign began with a 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava before they defeated Manchester City 4-2 away from home.

The French champions subsequently overcame Barcelona 4-2 before producing another emphatic performance against Villarreal, winning 6-0 in Spain.

The victory over Villarreal further demonstrated the attacking strength of Luis Enrique’s side, who have combined goalscoring efficiency with the ability to compete against some of Europe’s strongest teams.

Their four victories have also included wins against two former Champions League winners, Manchester City and Barcelona, underlining the quality of their start.

Real Madrid maintain winning momentum

Real Madrid have also demonstrated their ability to grind out results, although their fourth victory required another determined performance.

The Spanish giants opened their campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Inter Milan before defeating Roma 4-3 in Italy.

They subsequently recorded a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, giving them nine points from three matches.

Their latest outing against AEK Athens proved more difficult, but Madrid eventually secured a 3-2 victory to maintain their perfect record.

The result took their tally to 12 points, keeping them level with PSG at the summit of the league-phase standings.

Madrid’s ability to win both high-scoring encounters and closely contested matches has kept them firmly in contention for one of the eight automatic qualification places.

Liverpool’s defeat ends perfect start

The fourth matchday also produced a significant development as Liverpool lost their first match of the competition, ending their 100 per cent record.

The Premier League side suffered a 3-2 defeat away to Fenerbahçe on Wednesday after winning their opening three fixtures.

Liverpool had begun their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid before defeating LASK 6-3 and Villarreal 4-3.

However, the defeat in Istanbul left them on nine points, alongside several other teams competing for positions in the top eight.

Arsenal also strengthened their position with a 2-1 away victory over Slavia Prague, taking their points tally to 10 and placing them third in the standings.

Arsenal, Como and Barcelona among chasing teams

Arsenal are currently the closest challengers to the leading pair, with 10 points from four matches.

The Gunners have recorded three victories and one draw, maintaining their unbeaten status despite losing the perfect record.

Como have also attracted attention with their performances, particularly after their remarkable 9-1 away victory over Lens on Wednesday.

The Italian side have nine points, having won three of their four matches, and are among the teams occupying positions in the automatic qualification zone.

Barcelona are also on nine points after defeating Aston Villa 3-0, while Manchester City recovered from their earlier defeat to PSG with a 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig.

Other teams on nine points include Aston Villa, who lost to Barcelona, and Liverpool, whose first defeat came against Fenerbahçe.

The standings underline how competitive the new league-phase format has become, with several clubs separated by goal difference despite having identical points.

Bayern, Inter and Manchester United seek recovery

Bayern Munich moved to eight points following a 2-0 away victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The German champions remain among the leading teams, having recorded two victories and two draws from their opening four matches.

Inter Milan also improved their position with a 3-0 victory over Feyenoord, taking their tally to six points.

Manchester United recorded a 3-2 home victory over Roma, while Galatasaray defeated Stuttgart 2-0.

Meanwhile, Porto strengthened their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Napoli, and Club Brugge secured an important 2-1 away win against PSV Eindhoven.

The results have increased the pressure on teams seeking to finish among the top eight, which guarantees automatic qualification for the round of 16.

What happens next?

The league phase consists of eight matches for each club, meaning Real Madrid and PSG still have four fixtures to play before the standings are finalised.

The top eight teams will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while clubs finishing between ninth and 24th will enter the knockout-phase play-offs.

Teams placed 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the competition.

Real Madrid’s next league-phase fixture is against PSV Eindhoven on November 24, while PSG will host Roma on November 25.

Both sides will therefore have opportunities to extend their winning runs when the competition resumes later this month.

For now, the two clubs remain the only teams to have won all four of their opening matches, with Arsenal, Como, Barcelona, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and other challengers seeking to close the gap.
