According to a post by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso explained how his team prepared for Everton’s one-on-one battles and stressed the importance of every squad member.
Alonso said Chelsea expected Everton to create individual duels during their Premier League meeting. The coaching staff therefore asked Cole Palmer and João Pedro to stand up to those challenges.
“We knew today that Everton can come 1 on 1, 1v1, and we had to ask Cole and Joao to hold the duels,” Alonso said.
The manager’s comments highlighted the importance of winning individual contests in Chelsea’s approach to the match. Palmer and Pedro were given specific responsibilities to help the team deal with Everton’s direct challenges.
Alonso also discussed the importance of maintaining unity within the squad. He emphasised that every player has a role to play, even when they are not regularly included in the starting line-up.
“Everybody in the squad feels important, and everybody knows their moment can arrive anytime,” he said.
The Chelsea manager’s remarks pointed to his belief that squad depth and readiness are essential throughout a demanding season. Players may be required to step in because of injuries, tactical adjustments or changes during matches.
His comments came after Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton, a result that also saw the team dedicate their clean sheet to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez following his injury during the game.
Alonso’s message was that Chelsea need contributions from across the squad, while players must be prepared to take their opportunities when they arise.
