According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday October 23, 2026, Barcelona midfielder Rodri has expressed his excitement ahead of his first El Clasico against Real Madrid, while warning that their fierce rivals will be determined to secure a positive result when the two sides meet on Sunday.
Speaking to DAZN ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Rodri described El Clasico as a special occasion that attracts worldwide attention. However, he also acknowledged the challenge Barcelona face against a Real Madrid side he expects to approach the game with maximum intensity.
“This will be my first Clasico, so it will be a very special occasion. I hope everything goes well,” Rodri said.
The midfielder, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City during the summer, admitted that returning to Spanish football has been a positive experience. He also highlighted the unique atmosphere surrounding matches of this magnitude.
“Returning to La Liga and playing matches of this kind is extremely special because they put you in front of the eyes of the entire world. It is as if the world stops to watch them,” he explained.
Rodri also discussed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, praising the Portuguese coach's personality and influence on the teams he manages.
“Mourinho is a manager with a very strong personality and has a major impact on every team he coaches. He has a very clear philosophy and always manages to raise the competitive level of his teams,” the Barcelona midfielder said.
Although he recognises that Real Madrid play differently from Barcelona, Rodri expects the contest to be fiercely competitive.
“Obviously, Real Madrid play in a different way from us, but the competitive spirit is always there, especially in a match as big as El Clasico,” he added.
“So, we expect a Real Madrid that will go all out.”
The midfielder also suggested that Madrid will be eager to improve their recent record in the rivalry. According to Rodri, the team have been told that Real Madrid have won only one of their last six or seven Clasico encounters, a statistic he believes could fuel their determination to respond.
Barcelona, meanwhile, head into the fixture following a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Rodri admitted that the loss was a setback but insisted that the squad remain focused on their objectives.
“We will continue on our path. It is true that we suffered a setback in our last match against PSG, but we have a good mentality and the desire to keep working and do things properly,” he said.
Sunday's encounter will offer Barcelona an opportunity to respond to that defeat and demonstrate their ability to compete under pressure. For Rodri, it will also be a significant personal milestone as he prepares to experience one of football's most famous rivalries for the first time in a Barcelona shirt.
