Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after he collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during their Premier League match on Saturday.

As reported by the Associated Press, Martinez left his line to deal with a cross into the penalty area and collided with Branthwaite in the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool.

Medical staff from both sides tended to the players.

Branthwaite carried on after taking a concussion test, whereas Martinez was treated for roughly 10 minutes before being stretchered off.

The Associated Press, citing broadcaster TNT Sports, reported that the Chelsea goalkeeper was being taken to hospital.

Mike Penders came on in place of Martinez, making his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso provided an update on the goalkeeper’s condition in an interview with TNT Sports after the match, according to The Guardian.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious. Right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests … so let’s see … but this is what I know so far,” Alonso said.

According to The Guardian’s live coverage of the match, the incident drew boos from some Everton supporters as Martinez was carried off.

Chelsea won the match 2-0, with Pedro Neto finding the net in the 46th and 90th minutes.

At the time of the match report, the result lifted Chelsea above Everton in the Premier League table.
