Paris Saint-Germain could be missing Nuno Mendes and Maghnes Akliouche when they face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, following reports that both players experienced physical problems during their recent match against Strasbourg.
According to Barca Universal on Sunday, October 18, 2026, PSG head coach Luis Enrique is monitoring the situation as his team prepares for a difficult encounter against Hansi Flick’s in-form Barcelona side.
Mundo Deportivo reports that both Mendes and Akliouche are doubts for the upcoming fixture. The French club is expected to assess their respective conditions before deciding whether either player will be available for selection.
Mendes reportedly felt discomfort late in the match against Strasbourg, prompting his substitution. However, the precise nature and seriousness of the Portuguese defender’s problem remain unknown.
Akliouche also experienced muscular discomfort during the game, putting his participation against Barcelona in doubt. PSG will assess his progress over the coming days before making a final decision regarding his availability.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are also experiencing defensive difficulties following their 5-2 win over Real Betis. Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde reportedly picked up fitness concerns during the encounter, while Andreas Christensen remains unavailable due to injury.
The situation could create significant selection problems for Flick ahead of Wednesday’s showdown. If the affected defenders are unable to recover in time, Pau Cubarsi could be the only fully fit natural centre-back available, potentially forcing the German tactician to consider other options at the back.
Frenkie de Jong could emerge as a possible alternative, having previously been used in a defensive position after returning from injury. Another option would be to give an opportunity to a young defender from Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy.
Having Garcia, Kounde or Martin available would provide Barcelona with a welcome boost, particularly as they prepare to face the reigning European champions. Missing several key defensive players could make the contest considerably more difficult for Flick’s team.
As both clubs attempt to manage their respective injury situations, the coming days will play an important role in determining their available personnel for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League encounter.
