According to a report by Madrid Universal on Friday October 30, 2026, Andriy Lunin’s relationship with Real Madrid remains unusual, considering how consistently the Ukrainian goalkeeper has performed whenever opportunities arrived. Despite serving as Thibaut Courtois’ understudy, he has repeatedly demonstrated impressive quality under pressure.
His performances have attracted interest from elsewhere and opened opportunities to pursue regular first-team football. Nevertheless, neither Lunin nor Real Madrid has shown much enthusiasm for ending their partnership despite his substitute status.
According to AS, Real Madrid regard Lunin as an ideal deputy for Courtois and have complete confidence in his abilities. Former goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis and successor Nuno Santos reportedly share that assessment.
Lunin received offers to leave during the summers of 2024 and 2025, but none convinced him to depart. He values his stability in Madrid, his dressing-room standing and the reputation he has built.
Although pursuing a starting position elsewhere has been discussed, the Ukrainian appreciates his situation at the Spanish club. His representative, Jorge Mendes, also played an important role in persuading him to stay put.
Even when Lunin reportedly communicated a desire to leave, Real Madrid rejected the possibility. Instead, the club demonstrated its commitment by extending his contract until 2030, underlining their strong belief in his contribution.
The goalkeeper also has strong confidence in his abilities and does not consider himself inferior to Courtois. He recognises the Belgian’s exceptional quality, while believing he can consistently deliver comparable performances when needed.
Lunin’s displays whenever Courtois has been unavailable have repeatedly supported that confidence. Most recently, he impressed against Barcelona, making six important saves to help Real Madrid secure a significant victory during the match.
Although he is expected to return to the substitutes’ bench, Lunin is unlikely to complain. He accepts his position professionally, continuing to provide reliable competition and an alternative whenever the team needs him.
