Man City Learn Timeline For Sanction As Fresh Punishment Update Emerges

According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Saturday October 17, 2026, Manchester City are reportedly expected to learn the potential punishment for their 114 alleged financial rule breaches before the current season concludes, as uncertainty continues over the outcome of their appeal.

The Premier League charged City with 115 financial violations, and the club were found guilty of 114. However, the reigning English giants deny any wrongdoing and have challenged the verdict, leaving the final outcome unresolved.

Speculation surrounding the possible consequences has intensified, with potential sanctions reportedly including expulsion from the Premier League, a substantial points deduction, a transfer ban, a significant financial penalty and the removal of previously won titles. A severe points deduction could leave City facing the prospect of relegation.

The uncertainty has also raised questions about the futures of several players, particularly those unwilling to compete outside England’s top division or without the opportunity to play European football.

According to Football Insider, sources believe City will be informed of the possible sanctions before the season ends. Should their appeal fail, the authorities would then determine the punishment. However, the precise timing remains uncertain while the appeal process continues.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke explained that the next step depends on the appeal’s outcome. He noted that an independent panel would subsequently consider the appropriate sanctions if the original verdict stands.

O’Rourke acknowledged that the process was complicated and that the timing remained unclear. Nevertheless, he stressed that any punishment following an unsuccessful appeal should be decided during the current season, arguing that leaving the matter unresolved would undermine the campaign.

Meanwhile, sports lawyer James Severn has discussed City’s prospects of overturning the decision. He explained that the club would need to demonstrate a significant legal, factual or procedural error that materially influenced the original ruling.

The Appeal Board has considerable authority to uphold or dismiss the challenge, change the decision or issue another appropriate ruling.

Severn also suggested that bank statements, government records and contemporaneous payment documents could strengthen City’s case if they established that disputed funds originated from the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s owners.

However, he warned that City would face a difficult challenge if the commission had already examined those documents and still concluded that the financial arrangements were misleading. Demonstrating that important evidence was misunderstood, taken out of context or contradicted by other records could prove crucial to their appeal.
