MCI 3-2 IPS: Match Review And Updated English Premier League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Manchester City continued their impressive start to the Premier League season with a 3-2 victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium.

The reigning champions extended their unbeaten Premier League run against newly promoted sides to 32 matches, recording their seventh consecutive victory to begin the campaign despite facing a determined Ipswich side that threatened to make life difficult for Enzo Maresca’s men.

Manchester City’s first home league match since being found guilty of more than 100 financial breaches began amid protests from supporters, who booed the Premier League anthem before kick-off. However, the hosts gradually settled into the contest and began creating dangerous opportunities.

Ruben Dias tested Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton with a powerful effort, forcing an impressive save before City eventually broke the deadlock. Jeremy Doku delivered a cross into the penalty area, which Phil Foden converted to give the hosts the advantage.

Ipswich responded almost immediately, refusing to allow City to establish control. Abdoul Ouattara played an accurate pass behind Marc Guehi, allowing Daizen Maeda to run through and calmly slot the ball past the goalkeeper to restore parity.

The visitors subsequently threatened to take the lead when Emersonn fired narrowly wide, but City regained their advantage through Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker positioned himself inside the penalty area and headed home Mateo Kovacic’s cross to make it 2-1.

Dias nearly extended City’s advantage before half-time, but Walton produced another excellent save to keep Ipswich within touching distance.

After the restart, both sides continued searching for goals. Emersonn and Nico O’Reilly sent headed efforts wide, while Enzo Fernandez missed an opportunity to increase City’s lead when his free-kick from approximately 25 yards sailed over the crossbar.

City eventually secured greater control of the contest when Haaland struck again. The striker broke through the middle of Ipswich’s defence before calmly finishing to register his second goal of the afternoon and put the hosts 3-1 ahead.

Ipswich continued pushing forward and received a late opportunity to reduce the deficit, with Zian Flemming converting from the penalty spot to make it 3-2.

Haaland appeared to have an opportunity to complete his hat-trick in the closing stages, but VAR ruled out the goal, leaving City to settle for a two-goal contribution from their leading striker.
