According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Bruno Fernandes can no longer be trusted by any manager following his recent comments about Michael Carrick after the team's disappointing Champions League defeat to Como.
The former United midfielder has strongly criticised Fernandes for speaking publicly about the team's tactics, insisting that the club captain's actions could affect his future at Old Trafford and his reputation among other managers in European football.
Scholes said: "What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that’s unforgivable. How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now? I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don’t think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that."
Fernandes expressed his frustration after Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como in Italy, with the midfielder questioning the decision not to press the opposition players one-on-one during the match.
His comments reportedly did not go down well with Carrick and the coaching staff, who decided to leave him on the bench for Sunday's Premier League meeting with Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder was not introduced even as United struggled and eventually suffered another disappointing 3-0 defeat.
Scholes' reaction shows how seriously some former United players have taken the situation, especially because Fernandes is the club captain and is expected to support the manager during a difficult period for the team.
Manchester United have now gone eight matches without a win in all competitions, increasing the pressure on Carrick as he prepares his players for Saturday's Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Fernandes' situation will therefore be one to watch in the coming days, as the midfielder will hope to regain his place in the starting lineup while United attempt to improve their results and restore confidence within the squad.
