Manchester United have opted to give Michael Carrick more time in charge despite mounting pressure over his future following the club’s disappointing results this season.
According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Carrick is expected to remain in the dugout for Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Manchester Evening News also reports that United’s senior officials have decided against making an immediate managerial change.
The decision comes after a difficult spell that has seen the Red Devils suffer consecutive defeats, including a humiliating 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth on Sunday. The result increased uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s position and raised further questions about the team’s performances.
United have managed just two victories this season, against Ipswich Town and Azerbaijan’s Sabah, leaving them struggling in the lower reaches of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.
However, discussions involving the club’s leadership and the Glazer family have reportedly resulted in Carrick receiving another opportunity to improve the situation.
The performances of the players are also believed to have played a role in the decision, with the club acknowledging that responsibility for the team’s poor results cannot be placed entirely on the manager.
Carrick’s immediate priority is now to prepare his side for a difficult trip to Chelsea, where he will be under pressure to deliver a positive result. The former United midfielder previously secured a victory at Stamford Bridge during his interim spell last season, but faces a fresh test against Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will also be looking to respond after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. Mathys Tel scored one of the goals, while an own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders contributed to the Blues’ disappointing result.
Before hosting United, Alonso’s team must travel to Anfield on Wednesday for their Carabao Cup fourth-round clash with Liverpool.
The Chelsea manager has already confirmed that João Pedro will miss the encounter after picking up a thigh injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.
Cole Palmer is also unavailable for the cup match following his red card against Tottenham. Emiliano Martinez, Reece James and Jamie Gittens are further injury concerns ahead of Chelsea’s busy schedule.
