According to a report by Metro on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has criticised several Manchester United players, claiming that some are no longer good enough to represent the club following their disappointing start to the season.
Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, leaving them 16th in the Premier League table and increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Despite the growing uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s future, Gerrard believes the club's problems extend beyond the manager and has questioned the quality of several players in the squad.
Speaking on Overlap Daily, the former England international praised captain Bruno Fernandes, describing him as a terrific footballer and the best player at the club.
However, Gerrard criticised defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, arguing that Manchester United should have moved them on earlier.
“They’re not Manchester United players anymore. They should have been moved on quicker,” he said.
Gerrard also criticised Lisandro Martinez, questioning his attitude towards the club and his comments about the team's transfer activity.
In midfield, the former Liverpool captain questioned the decision to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a reported £50 million, insisting that the Brazilian was not good enough for Manchester United.
He also discussed Carlos Baleba, acknowledging the midfielder's potential but arguing that he was not yet ready to help the club compete at the top of the Premier League.
Gerrard further criticised winger Amad Diallo, describing his performances as inconsistent and claiming that he had not shown enough this season.
Meanwhile, he praised Bryan Mbeumo, identifying the forward as one of Manchester United's standout performers despite the team's struggles.
Gerrard also questioned why Brazil international Matheus Cunha was left out of the starting lineup against Bournemouth, suggesting that the forward needed to improve his performances or training standards.
He was equally critical of Benjamin Sesko, saying the striker was not good enough as Manchester United continue to struggle for consistency.
The former Liverpool captain also directed criticism towards the club's recruitment department, questioning why Manchester United had signed players he believes do not meet the club's expectations.
Former United defender Gary Neville has also expressed concerns about the professionalism of some players, arguing that certain members of the squad are not maintaining the standards expected at Old Trafford.
