Rafa Alkorta, a former Real Madrid defender, has sung the praises of Jose Mourinho, stating that the team have become more united, structured and tactically disciplined.

Madrid have been in sensational form in recent weeks with their performances improving with every game. Last weekend they had their best moment of the season securing a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice.

They have continued their stunning run of form with a 3-0 win on Sunday away to Racing Santander. At half time Real Madrid were in complete control thanks to their increased confidence and attacking flair.

Rafa Alkorta, a former Madrid player, has praised the way the team have become more structured and controlled. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen them dominate the first half like this," Alkorta told Defensa Central.

"I can’t remember the last time they dominated the first half like this. Everyone is doing their role and when needed they track back."

He also praised Jude Bellingham for his intelligent attacking runs and goal scoring. "His runs into the box are his strength. He’s an impressive player! His runs to the far post are incredible."

But Alkorta had only praise for Mourinho. "I think they’re a harder team to beat now with the Portuguese man looking after unity in the team."

"Knowing what to do is important but knowing what to stop your opponent doing is even more important. They have more unity, selflessness and are working towards their goals."

He also said that Madrid have been doing something that they haven’t done for a long time, improving their own game whilst restricting the opposition.

"You’re restricting the opposition but you’re also improving your own game. Real Madrid have been missing that," he added.

Speaking about how Mourinho manages his players, the former Real Madrid star said that he likes to make changes around the 60 minute mark when teams are already winning comfortably.

Alkorta claims that making quick changes would make the players have an easier workload and less physicality from a busy schedule.

As Real Madrid are getting into their stride, Mourinho will be pleased to see his players getting more praise. The Portuguese manager seems to be leaving his mark on the team with wins against Racing Santander and Barcelona. Organisation, selflessness and discipline is key.
