According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday November 2, 2026, Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez in January, but the move will only be considered if the Argentine can be secured for a low transfer fee.
According to reports, the Catalan club are unwilling to make a major financial commitment despite their need for defensive reinforcements.
Martinez remains on sporting director Deco’s list of potential targets as Barcelona assess ways to strengthen Hansi Flick’s squad. Their defensive situation has become difficult ahead of the winter transfer window. Injuries to Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Xavi Espart have reduced the manager’s available options.
The situation has increased Barcelona’s need for another defender. Martinez is being monitored because of his experience at Manchester United and with Argentina. However, the club’s interest does not mean they are ready to meet any financial demand for his signature.
Barcelona reportedly view a low-cost agreement as the only condition that would make the transfer possible. Their limited financial flexibility means they cannot afford to spend heavily on a centre-back, even with several players unavailable.
Martinez’s contract situation at Old Trafford could work in Barcelona’s favour. His current deal expires at the end of the season, while discussions over an extension are reportedly not progressing. Manchester United could therefore face the choice of selling him in January or risking his departure for nothing when his contract runs out.
A winter transfer could allow United to collect a fee, while Barcelona would gain an experienced defender without paying a substantial amount. However, any agreement would depend on United’s willingness to negotiate.
Barcelona want United to accept a price that suits their financial limits. They are not prepared to pay an excessive fee for Martinez, particularly when his contract situation could create another opportunity to sign him later.
