According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday November 5, 2026, Real Madrid defender Denzel Dumfries has highlighted the importance of rest and recovery for professional footballers amid growing concerns about the increasing number of matches players are expected to play every season.
The Dutch international made the remarks while speaking at the XV Sports Global Medicine Summit held at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The event was organised by the Sports Doctor Network and also featured Real Madrid's head of medical department, Dr Niko Mihic.
Speaking about the demands of modern football, Dumfries stressed that players need sufficient time to recover because of the increasingly congested football calendar.
Professional footballers are now required to compete in several domestic and European competitions while also representing their respective national teams during international breaks.
The situation has raised concerns about fatigue, injuries and the physical demands placed on players throughout the season.
Dumfries made his position clear, saying: “We need to rest, we play a lot of matches…”
The Real Madrid defender also identified sleep as one of the most important factors in helping professional athletes recover from demanding training sessions and matches.
“Sleep is crucial; we need to recover as quickly as possible, and sleep is one of the most powerful tools we [footballers] have to achieve that and to take care of our bodies,” he added.
The 30-year-old has enjoyed a lengthy career at the highest level, having spent time playing in the Netherlands and Italy before moving to Spain.
His experience across different leagues has allowed him to witness the growing demands of professional football, with the number of matches increasing over the years.
Meanwhile, Dumfries is still working to establish himself at Real Madrid following his summer arrival from Inter Milan.
The Spanish giants signed the Netherlands international after activating his €20 million release clause, bringing him in as a replacement for Dani Carvajal, who departed at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract.
Since joining the club, Dumfries has made 11 appearances across all competitions and provided one assist.
Although his performances have not been particularly poor, he has yet to completely convince manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician has occasionally opted to use Federico Valverde at right-back instead of the Dutch defender, highlighting the competition for places in the position.
Dumfries will now be hoping to continue improving and secure a regular starting position as the season progresses.
