According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Chelsea moved to the top of the Women's Super League table after recording an emphatic 6-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter scored twice each, while Sjoeke Nüsken and Maika Hamano also found the net as Chelsea secured their fifth consecutive league victory. Tottenham's goals came through Matilda Vinberg and Signe Gaupset.
Chelsea took the lead in the 25th minute when James capitalised on a defensive mistake by Toko Koga outside Tottenham's penalty area. The forward won possession, drove towards goal and calmly finished past goalkeeper Lize Kop from a tight angle.
Tottenham responded strongly and drew level six minutes before half-time. After building pressure on the Chelsea defence, Julie Blakstad delivered a cross that Vinberg headed into the net at the far post in the 41st minute.
The visitors continued to threaten after the restart and looked capable of taking control of the contest. However, Chelsea regained the lead in the 58th minute through Carpenter, who converted Alyssa Thompson's low cross after the American attacker dribbled into the penalty area.
James extended Chelsea's advantage four minutes later, curling a fine finish into the far corner after receiving a pass from Lucy Bronze. The England international's second goal put the hosts firmly in control.
Chelsea struck again in the 67th minute when substitute Nüsken, who had only recently entered the match, unleashed a powerful effort to make it 4-1.
Hamano added the fifth goal in the 86th minute with an impressive long-range strike from around 30 yards, further underlining Chelsea's attacking quality in the second half.
Tottenham managed to reduce the deficit in the 87th minute when Gaupset won possession near the edge of Chelsea's penalty area before beating the goalkeeper with a shot towards the near post.
However, Carpenter completed the scoring in first-half stoppage time, converting another assist from Keira Walsh in the 90th minute plus one to seal Chelsea's convincing victory.
