Barcelona See Former Club Captain As Future First-Team Manager With Deco Left Impressed

According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday October 22, 2026, his football knowledge, leadership qualities, and understanding of the club's philosophy have impressed sporting director Deco and executive Bojan Krkic, who reportedly believe that Sergio Busquets, who was captain of the Barcelona first team, could become the first-team manager of the club in the future.

The club is supposedly contemplating the prospect of Busquets managing the senior team within five or six years, as reported by Catalunya Radio, which is supported by Busquets' early work with Barcelona Atletic.

Starting out as an assistant to Juliano Belletti on Barcelona's reserve team, the former midfielder has helped young players develop within the club's system while gaining valuable coaching experience.

Reportedly, Deco, in particular, has spoken highly of Busquets' tactical acumen, personality, and clear vision for the game of football after seeing him in action during his first few games as a coach.

Busquets is believed to have an in-depth understanding of Barcelona's classic playing style, thanks to his extensive time spent playing for the club and his time spent training under numerous renowned coaches.

As he moves into management, his knowledge of positional football could serve as a solid foundation, and working with younger players early on will give him a chance to hone his coaching and leadership skills.

According to reports, Barcelona is considering him for the position of first team coach in around five or six years, given that he keeps improving and displays the right traits along the way.

The former Spain international is still in the early stages of his professional career, though. In August, he became a member of Belletti's coaching staff and is now gaining experience and pursuing his coaching qualifications.

Barcelona can keep an eye on Busquets' progress without putting undue pressure on him now that he's back in a familiar setting, where he can learn the trade in an atmosphere he understands.

Taking charge of the senior team is still something of a pipe dream, not a concrete strategy for the future. Whether he becomes a serious contender depends on how he does in the years to come.

At the same time, Hansi Flick is still in charge of Barcelona, and reports have it that former midfielder Cesc Fabregas is being considered as a possible future successor to the German manager.
