Chelsea have confirmed that Emi Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw after suffering a serious head injury during their 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
According to a report by the Evening Standard on Sunday, 18 October 2026, the Argentine goalkeeper was taken to hospital following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
The incident occurred midway through the second half, forcing medical staff to attend to both players. Martinez received treatment on the pitch for approximately 10 minutes before being stretchered off and taken to a nearby hospital for further assessment.
Chelsea subsequently confirmed that the 34-year-old had suffered a fractured jaw requiring surgery, alongside concussion. The club also provided reassurance that the injury had not resulted in serious brain damage.
A statement from Chelsea read: "Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw.
"Martinez was injured following a collision midway through the second half of our 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
"Martinez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery.
"Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout."
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had earlier provided an update after the match, explaining that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium and was undergoing precautionary tests.
"As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious. Now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests. Let’s see, but this is what I know so far," Alonso said.
Despite the injury, Martinez had delivered an impressive performance before his withdrawal, making two important saves as Chelsea secured their first Premier League clean sheet since January.
The victory was also marked by Pedro Neto dedicating the result to the injured goalkeeper after scoring both goals for the Blues.
Martinez's absence could present a challenge for Alonso as Chelsea continue their Premier League campaign.
The club are already dealing with other injury concerns, including captain Reece James, who has undergone knee surgery, while Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are also sidelined.
Although Chelsea have confirmed that Martinez's operation was successful, the precise length of his recovery remains uncertain.
His return will depend on his progress following surgery and concussion, leaving the club to assess its goalkeeping options in the coming weeks.
