Chelsea legends Didier Drogba and John Terry have reacted to a birthday tribute paid to former club owner Roman Abramovich by ex-Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia as the Russian billionaire celebrated his 60th birthday.
According to a report by The Athletic on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Granovskaia sent Abramovich a heartfelt birthday message on Saturday, October 24, reflecting on their longstanding relationship and the remarkable memories they created during their time together at Chelsea.
Granovskaia, who worked closely with Abramovich throughout his ownership of the club, highlighted how their relationship had lasted for nearly three decades.
She wrote: “Wishing Roman a very happy birthday! A special milestone this year, although I’d rather not mention the number — it would only remind me that we’ve known each other for almost 30 years, which hardly seems possible.
“So many extraordinary memories along the way. Wishing him lots of happiness and many more wonderful moments to come!”
Following the post, Drogba shared Granovskaia’s message, while Terry, David Luiz and Victor Moses reacted with blue heart emojis, expressing their appreciation for the former owner and the ex-director.
Granovskaia was a key figure in Chelsea’s management during Abramovich’s ownership. She began representing the Russian businessman in transfer negotiations and contract discussions in 2010 before joining Chelsea’s board in 2013. She was subsequently appointed chief executive in 2014.
Her time at Stamford Bridge coincided with one of the most successful eras in the club’s history, as Chelsea secured several major domestic and European trophies under Abramovich’s leadership.
Abramovich’s 19-year ownership of Chelsea came to an end in 2022 after the United Kingdom government imposed sanctions on him following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The club was later purchased by a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
During his time at Chelsea, Abramovich oversaw the club’s success in winning five Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies, achievements that remain a significant part of the club’s history.
The birthday tribute also came during a challenging weekend for Chelsea, following their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Although the birthday message did not indicate any changes to the current positions of Chelsea or the individuals associated with its former ownership, the reactions from Drogba, Terry and other former players demonstrated that the connections established during Abramovich’s era remain strong.
