According to Daily Post on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed disappointment following his team's 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League, identifying their inability to make the most of scoring opportunities as a major factor behind the defeat.
The encounter saw Arsenal secure all three points through Kai Havertz, whose first-half strike proved decisive at the end of the contest.
Liverpool struggled to find an equaliser despite creating opportunities, leaving the defending side of the contest frustrated after failing to turn their attacking efforts into goals.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Van Dijk admitted that the result was difficult to accept, particularly because Liverpool had opportunities to change the outcome.
He said: "Disappointment, disappointment."
The Dutch defender explained that Liverpool made efforts to get back into the game but did not do enough in the closing stages to trouble Arsenal's defence consistently.
According to Van Dijk, the team could have improved its approach during the final 15 minutes by delivering more balls into the penalty area in search of an equalising goal.
He noted that although Liverpool attempted different approaches to rescue a result, their efforts ultimately fell short.
Van Dijk also observed that Liverpool's performance improved after Arsenal took the lead, suggesting that the response following Havertz's goal offered the team opportunities to get back into the contest.
He pointed to a significant opportunity involving Alexis, which he believed could have changed the direction of the match had it resulted in a goal.
The Liverpool captain said: "After we conceded the goal, we started to play much better. A big chance from Alexis could have changed the game."
He further explained that his teammates remained determined to fight for a positive result throughout the second half, knowing that the match was still open.
However, despite their continued efforts to find a breakthrough, Arsenal maintained their advantage until the final whistle.
Van Dijk acknowledged that Liverpool's attacking attempts were insufficient to prevent the defeat, stressing that the team would have to reflect on the missed opportunities.
The result leaves Liverpool with reasons to assess their attacking effectiveness, particularly their ability to create and convert decisive chances in important Premier League fixtures.
