According to a report by Metro on Sunday, October 18, 2026, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised Harry Maguire for his performance in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The England international received special recognition from the Sky Sports pundit, who highlighted his defensive contribution in the second half as Manchester United struggled to protect their advantage and secure all three points.
Manchester United took the lead in the 35th minute through Bryan Mbeumo, who finished off a precise delivery from Youri Tielemans to put Michael Carrick’s side ahead.
However, Leeds United responded after the interval, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin finding the net to restore parity and prevent the visitors from claiming a much-needed victory.
The result extended Manchester United’s winless run to six matches across all competitions, leaving the club under pressure to improve their results. The draw also kept Carrick’s side in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Despite the disappointing outcome for Manchester United, Carragher identified Maguire as one of the team’s standout performers, particularly during a difficult spell after Leeds scored their equaliser.
The former Liverpool centre-back acknowledged the challenge of playing away against Leeds, noting that several teams could struggle to collect maximum points at Elland Road this season.
Carragher said that taking a point from the fixture was a respectable result in isolation, although Manchester United’s recent performances meant the team needed victories rather than further draws.
He explained that the club’s poor run of results had increased the importance of every match, making the failure to secure a win feel like an opportunity missed.
Carragher then turned his attention to Maguire’s display, describing the defender as fantastic, especially in the second half.
The pundit observed that Manchester United appeared vulnerable after Calvert-Lewin brought Leeds level, with the possibility of the visitors conceding again becoming a concern.
However, Maguire helped maintain defensive stability during that period, preventing the situation from deteriorating further and allowing Manchester United to leave Elland Road with a point.
Carragher praised the defender’s ability to hold the backline together when the team came under pressure, emphasising the importance of his contribution in a match that ended without a winner.
