Manchester United are facing mounting pressure to improve their performances after a difficult start to the season left them 13th in both the Premier League and Champions League standings, according to a report by Sky Sports published on October 18, 2026.
The latest disappointment came on Sunday, when United were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road. Despite taking the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 35th minute, Michael Carrick’s side failed to secure all three points after Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised shortly after the interval.
The result extended United’s disappointing domestic campaign, leaving them with just one victory from their opening seven Premier League matches. They have also recorded four draws and two defeats, accumulating seven points and remaining in 13th place.
Their struggles have extended to European competition, where United have also found it difficult to establish themselves among the leading teams. A 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on October 13 further complicated their Champions League campaign, leaving them with three points from their first two matches.
Although their points total remains level with several other teams in the European standings, United currently occupy 13th position in the league-phase table.
The contrasting challenges in both competitions have placed greater attention on Carrick’s efforts to improve the team’s consistency. United have shown they can create opportunities and take the lead, but their inability to protect advantages and turn draws into victories has cost them valuable points.
Against Leeds, Mbeumo’s first-half goal appeared to put United in a strong position. However, Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser exposed their inability to maintain the advantage and left them settling for another draw.
United must now shift their focus to their next Champions League fixture against Como on Wednesday, October 21. The encounter presents an opportunity to respond to the defeat against Atletico Madrid and improve their position in the European competition.
With much of the campaign still remaining, United have time to recover. Nevertheless, they will need greater defensive organisation, improved concentration and more consistent finishing to climb the standings.
Their upcoming fixtures could prove important in determining whether Carrick can guide the team towards a more competitive position in both competitions.
