Manchester United have decided to keep Michael Carrick in charge for their Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend, despite growing pressure following a disappointing run of results.
According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, Carrick has been given another opportunity to turn the situation around at Old Trafford after holding talks with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox on Monday.
The discussions followed United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which further intensified scrutiny of the manager and his position at the club.
The result came days after United suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, adding to the growing frustration among supporters and within the squad.
United have struggled for consistency this season, recording just two wins in their first 12 matches across all competitions.
Their poor form has left them close to the Premier League relegation zone, increasing uncertainty over Carrick’s future.
The club have reportedly considered alternative managerial candidates, with Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann among the leading names linked with the position. However, United are understood to have reservations about the available options.
Carrick took charge of first-team training on Tuesday and is expected to lead the team against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October.
The match represents a crucial opportunity for United to end their winless run, having gone eight games without a victory.
Tensions have also increased following public criticism from players, including Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez.
Fernandes questioned the team's situation after the Champions League defeat and was subsequently left on the bench for the Bournemouth match.
Carrick has continued to accept responsibility for the club's poor performances, despite mounting pressure from supporters.
United fans chanted his name after the Bournemouth defeat, although boos were directed at the players once the manager had left the pitch.
Addressing the reaction, Carrick said: “It wasn’t a farewell from me.”
He acknowledged the team's struggles, adding: “The situation is where we are and we haven’t had results or performances that have been good enough.”
