According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday October 18, 2026, the seasoned Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will reportedly be staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu for another season after Real Madrid and the goalkeeper reportedly reached an agreement over a contract extension, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Spanish powerhouses are gearing up for a pivotal stage of the season as they aim to contend with Barcelona. Having placed a heavy emphasis on recruitment during the summer transfer window, club officials are now attempting to renew multiple existing contracts.
The current contract that Courtois is under will end after this season. But the deal he's proposing will keep him at Real Madrid for another year, as is the club's policy when it comes to contract extensions for experienced players.
With Cristiano Ronaldo as an exception, the club usually only offers experienced footballers twelve-month extensions. Thus, a one-year extension for Courtois is likely to be granted, with the possibility of a second review next season.
Courtois is still one of the best goalkeepers in football, even though he's 34 years old. The former Chelsea star has been a mainstay for Real Madrid since his arrival, and his stellar play in goal has been instrumental to the team's success.
His leadership is highly beneficial to a team that is looking for veterans who can mentor the younger members. Even though they are making plans for the future, Real Madrid supposedly isn't looking to replace him anytime soon.
The club is keeping an eye on some young goalkeepers who show promise as potential successors to the Belgian international. The highly regarded French goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, who is currently playing for Toulouse and has garnered attention for his performances in Ligue 1, is one possible candidate.
Additionally, Real Madrid is home to Andriy Lunin, who has done a great job filling in for Hugo Courtois. Although the Ukrainian goalkeeper is being considered, he may not be the club's long-term replacement, so they are looking into other possibilities.
For the time being, extending Courtois' contract gives Madrid stability in goal while giving them more time to find and cultivate a future successor.
