According to a report from Daily Post Nigeria, on Monday October 26, 2024, Fenerbahçe striker Vedat Muriqi believes his side’s defence can limit Victor Osimhen’s impact when they face Galatasaray in Monday’s Turkish Süper Lig derby at Rams Park.
Muriqi acknowledged the Nigerian forward’s strength and pace but said he trusts his teammates to handle the challenge.
“He’s a very strong and good player, but I trust my teammates,” he told beIN Sports, according to Turk Inform. “I think our defensive line can neutralise Osimhen’s speed and gain the upper hand.”
Osimhen has enjoyed several strong performances against Fenerbahçe since joining Galatasaray. Across four league meetings, he has recorded two wins and two draws, scoring once.
He also played a decisive role in last season’s Turkish Cup quarter-final, scoring twice in Galatasaray’s 2–1 victory over their rivals.
The 27-year-old recently went two Süper Lig matches without scoring as Galatasaray defeated Kasımpaşa and Gençlerbirliği. He ended that brief drought by finding the net against his former club, Lille, in the UEFA Champions League.
Muriqi’s comments add to the anticipation surrounding one of Turkish football’s fiercest rivalries. With both teams eager to claim bragging rights, Osimhen’s battle with Fenerbahçe’s defence could be a key feature of the derby.
