Fenerbahce Hand Liverpool First Champions League Defeat After Dramatic 3-2 Victory In Istanbul

According to a report by Evening Standard on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Liverpool's unbeaten start to the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League season came to an end after they suffered a 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in an exciting encounter in Istanbul.

Arne Slot's side travelled to Turkey determined to continue their winning run in the competition, but their defensive errors and inability to hold on to their leads allowed the hosts to produce an impressive comeback.

Liverpool went ahead twice during the match, but Fenerbahce showed remarkable resilience by recovering from both setbacks before scoring the decisive goal to take maximum points.

Teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni was one of the major positives for the visitors, as the 19-year-old delivered an impressive performance and gave Liverpool the lead with a superb volley.

Nyoni took advantage of a loose ball inside the penalty area after Rio Ngumoha's cross created uncertainty in the Fenerbahce defence. Virgil van Dijk's challenge contributed to Archie Brown's ineffective clearance, which allowed the youngster to fire towards goal. His effort subsequently deflected off Kojo Oppong and ended up in the net.

The strike made Nyoni Liverpool's youngest player to register his first Champions League goal, while also making him the competition's second-youngest goalscorer after Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Fenerbahce responded through Mason Greenwood, whose free-kick took a deflection off Jeremy Jacquet before crossing the goal line to make it 1-1.

The equaliser inspired the Turkish hosts to increase their attacking efforts, creating additional difficulties for Liverpool's backline.

After the break, Liverpool brought on Alexander Isak, who quickly rewarded the decision by connecting with Cody Gakpo's cross and heading the ball into the net to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

However, Fenerbahce refused to surrender, and Brown restored parity just four minutes later after exploiting another defensive lapse from the English side to score from close range.

The hosts completed their remarkable turnaround when Vedat Muriqi climbed above three Liverpool defenders and directed a powerful header into the net to make it 3-2.

Liverpool could not find another response, leaving Istanbul empty-handed after a disappointing defensive performance.

The defeat highlighted the Reds' ongoing problems at the back, with their total number of goals conceded in the Champions League league phase now standing at 10.

It also marked the end of Liverpool's 100 per cent record in the tournament, making the result even more frustrating following their 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
