Leipzig refused to surrender and equalised again three minutes later. Christopher Nkunku delivered an outstanding lofted pass into the penalty area, allowing Antonio Nusa to beat the goalkeeper with a brilliant finish into the bottom right corner.
The contest remained open as both teams searched for another goal. Leipzig came close to taking the lead when David Raum struck the crossbar with a free-kick, while City also threatened through Rayan Cherki, whose effort rattled the woodwork.
