According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been urged to make a significant attacking change ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa, with teenage winger Shea Lacey tipped to replace Amad Diallo in the starting line-up.
Lacey's impressive performance in Manchester United's 3-2 Champions League comeback victory over Roma has strengthened his case for a regular first-team role.
The 19-year-old came off the bench during Tuesday's encounter and made an immediate impact with his confidence, creativity and attacking quality.
Although Bruno Fernandes' penalty started United's comeback and Matheus Cunha scored twice, Lacey played an important role in changing the team's attacking approach.
Carrick was particularly impressed with the youngster's contribution, praising the "that bit of mischief" he brings to the team. Lacey also provided the assist for Cunha's winning goal with an accurately weighted pass.
The teenager completed all his attempted passes and won most of his individual duels, demonstrating his ability to operate effectively in tight spaces.
His development has been closely monitored since his early teenage years. Former Manchester United Under-21 manager Travis Binnion previously highlighted the youngster's potential, saying: "Everybody in the world knows about Shea Lacey."
However, questions remain over Amad's effectiveness in the final third. The Ivory Coast international has struggled to produce consistent goals and assists despite being regarded as one of United's most naturally gifted attacking players.
Amad has not scored since December 15, when Manchester United played out a 4-4 draw against Bournemouth.
He has managed only two assists during that period, raising concerns about his contribution to the team's attacking output.
His overall numbers have also declined, with seven goal involvements in 40 appearances since the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney has also questioned Amad's end product while supporting Lacey's introduction into the starting team.
‘Amad does some really good things, but it’s that end product, that is what takes you to the next level,’ Rooney said.
Carrick now faces an important decision ahead of Sunday's meeting with Aston Villa. Following the victory over Roma, giving Lacey a starting opportunity could provide United with the creativity and attacking energy they have lacked.
