Chelsea Learn Emi Martinez’s Expected Absence After Jaw Surgery As Return Timeline Emerges

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Sunday, 18 October 2026, after sustaining a jaw fracture in Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League win over Everton, goalkeeper Emi Martinez underwent surgery and is expected to miss around 40 days of action.

With a possible return date in early December, the Argentine international may miss a number of Chelsea fixtures in addition to Argentina's forthcoming international matches.

Injury to Martinez occurred at Hill Dickinson Stadium as a result of a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The goalkeeper had to endure extensive treatment after the incident, which happened in the second half, before he was carried off the field and taken to the hospital.

After the game, Xabi Alonso, Chelsea manager, confirmed that Martinez was alert and conscious when he left the stadium for pre-game medical checks.

The goalie reportedly had surgery on Saturday nite and may be out of commission for 40 days, according to Argentine journalist CL Merlo.

The Argentine national team and Chelsea will be without Dibu Martínez for a minimum of 40 days as he is currently undergoing surgery for a jaw fracture, according to Merlo.

According to that recovery schedule, Martinez may not be able to play in Chelsea's upcoming matches against Sunderland, Leeds United, and Liverpool. He may also sit out Chelsea's later matches against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

As a result of his injury, he may not be able to play in either of Argentina's November international matches against Uruguay or Costa Rica.

After Chelsea's match against Forest, their next Premier League match is on 2 December against Crystal Palace. If Martinez's recovery goes according to plan, he may get a chance to start again.

His actual return date, however, will be contingent upon his recuperation and post-operative medical evaluations.

After Martinez and Mike Penders helped Chelsea earn their first Premier League clean sheet in 23 matches in the win over Everton, Alonso's injury is a setback.

While the Argentine is out with an injury, Penders may get more playing time with the first team after coming on as a substitute for Martinez during the game.

Captain Reece James will also be out for a while after undergoing knee surgery; he will be out for at least a few months.
