Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso could face several challenging selection decisions ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Sunderland, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez reportedly keen to reclaim his place in the starting lineup.
According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Blues are preparing for a difficult away encounter against Sunderland, who defeated them 2-1 in May 2026 to end their hopes of qualifying for European football. Alonso will be eager to secure a victory and avenge that disappointing defeat.
Several players are also competing for starting positions, including Estevao, whose recent performances have given the manager plenty to consider. Wesley Fofana could also strengthen his case for selection following his recent form, while Marco Palestra, Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria are available again.
However, Martinez's possible return has emerged as one of the biggest talking points after the Argentine goalkeeper was seen participating in Chelsea's training session on Wednesday.
According to Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill, the experienced shot-stopper is determined to feature against Sunderland despite missing Chelsea's last three matches because of a fractured jaw.
Martinez was initially expected to miss approximately six matches, potentially ruling him out of Chelsea's first fixtures against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest after the international break.
His inclusion in Argentina's latest squad, alongside Aaron Anselmino and Valentin Barco, has also drawn attention to his recovery and potential return to action.
Gill reported: "Emi Martinez has been pushing to play vs Sunderland, and he's training today. Leaves Chelsea with a choice: stick with Mike Penders, or immediately return to Martinez."
Although Alonso is expected to provide an update on Friday, Martinez appears to be the leading contender to start if both goalkeepers receive medical clearance.
Nevertheless, Penders has delivered encouraging performances whenever he has been given an opportunity. The young goalkeeper has conceded just two goals in three appearances while recording an impressive save percentage of 77.8 per cent.
In comparison, Martinez has conceded 11 goals in six appearances, registering a save percentage of 69.4 per cent.
Despite Penders' superior statistics, Martinez remains Chelsea's established first-choice goalkeeper. However, replacing the 21-year-old could be a difficult decision for Alonso, especially given his recent performances. Nevertheless, Penders' mistake against Tottenham could influence the manager's thinking as he considers his options for Sunday's encounter.
