Crystal Palace 1-1 Hoffenheim Kamada Rescues Point After Wharton Red Card

According to a report by Evening Standard on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Crystal Palace secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim in the Europa League after Daichi Kamada scored a stoppage-time equaliser at Selhurst Park.

The Japanese midfielder rescued a valuable point for Pierre Sage's side after Adam Wharton was sent off in the second half, leaving the hosts with 10 players for the closing stages.

Hoffenheim made a flying start to the encounter, taking the lead in the seventh minute through Alexander Prass. The visitors punished Palace's defensive organisation on a counter-attack, with Tim Lemperle delivering an excellent cross into the penalty area. Prass got on the end of the delivery and directed a low effort towards goal.

Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson initially appeared to have the situation under control, but he failed to hold the shot, allowing the ball to trickle over the goal line.

The German side continued to threaten and could have extended their advantage before the interval. Fisnik Asllani came close on multiple occasions, forcing Henderson into action, while Andrej Kramaric also tested the Palace goalkeeper.

Crystal Palace eventually improved their attacking performance towards the end of the first half, with Kamada sending an effort narrowly wide. Jean-Philippe Mateta also attempted to restore parity, first with a header before forcing Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann into a save.

Palace struggled to establish control after the restart, with Kramaric missing another opportunity when he curled his effort wide of the left post. Sage responded by making a double substitution before the hour mark, introducing Eddie Nketiah and Oscar Mingueza for Quinten Timber and Anan Khalaili.

The hosts gradually increased their attacking intensity, and Yeremy Pino forced Baumann into a save with a low attempt after receiving a pass from Wharton. However, Palace suffered another setback in the 77th minute when Wharton received his second yellow card following an aerial challenge and an ensuing confrontation with Wouter Burger.

Despite protests from the Palace players, the referee maintained his decision, reducing the home side to 10 men. Sage subsequently introduced Dario Osorio for Mateta as Palace continued searching for an equaliser. Their persistence finally paid off in the first minute of stoppage time.

Tyrick Mitchell initially directed a header into the Hoffenheim penalty area, and the loose ball eventually reached Kamada, who fired past Baumann through the goalkeeper's legs.

The late goal ensured Palace avoided defeat despite spending the closing stages with a numerical disadvantage, providing Sage with a valuable result after a difficult evening at Selhurst Park. However, Wharton's dismissal means Palace will be without the midfielder for their next Europa League fixture.
