Huge Boost for Alonso as Key Star Returns Ahead of Manchester United Clash

According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has received an encouraging update concerning the availability of one of his most influential players ahead of Saturday's Premier League encounter against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are preparing for an important home fixture as they attempt to recover from a disappointing run of results. Chelsea have suffered consecutive defeats, with their latest setback coming against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, where they were eliminated through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

However, Alonso has been handed a significant boost following the return of attacking midfielder Cole Palmer, who is expected to be available for selection against Manchester United.

The England international was unavailable for Chelsea's midweek encounter with Liverpool after receiving a suspension during the previous Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.

His return provides Alonso with another attacking option as Chelsea seek to improve their creativity and goalscoring opportunities against Michael Carrick's Manchester United side.

Despite the positive development surrounding Palmer, Chelsea's preparations have been complicated by several fitness concerns involving important first-team players.

French defender Maxence Lacroix sustained a suspected hamstring problem during the Liverpool encounter and was substituted before the halftime interval. The defender is expected to undergo further medical examinations to establish the seriousness of the injury.

Meanwhile, midfielder Moises Caicedo and defender Malo Gusto are also facing uncertainty after experiencing physical discomfort during the same match.

Both players will require additional assessments before Chelsea's medical team can determine whether they are fit enough to participate in Saturday's encounter.

The situation has increased Alonso's selection difficulties, particularly with several other players already unavailable because of injuries.

Club captain Reece James remains sidelined after undergoing knee surgery and is not expected to return until the beginning of next year.

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro is also recovering from a thigh injury, while young winger Jamie Gittens continues his rehabilitation following an ankle problem suffered during international duty.

Nevertheless, Chelsea could receive another encouraging development in the goalkeeping department, with Emiliano Martinez reportedly making better-than-expected progress in his recovery from a broken jaw.

Additionally, Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria are available for selection after missing the midweek cup encounter against Liverpool.

With several important decisions still to be made, Alonso could introduce changes to his starting lineup as Chelsea prepare to welcome Manchester United.

Chelsea's predicted starting eleven in a 4-2-3-1 formation features Penders in goal, with Acheampong, Colwill, Fofana and Neto forming the defensive unit.

Caicedo and Henderson are expected to operate in central midfield, while Hato, Palmer and Rogers could provide attacking support behind Welbeck.

The availability of Palmer represents an important development for Chelsea, although Alonso will be hoping his remaining injury concerns do not further weaken his squad before kickoff.

Saturday's encounter offers the Blues an opportunity to return to winning ways, while Manchester United will also be determined to secure a positive result in what promises to be a competitive Premier League contest.
