ARS 1-1 BIR: Match Review And Latest English Women's Super League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Birmingham City at the Emirates Stadium, extending their winless run in the Women's Super League to five consecutive matches.

Renee Slegers' side entered the encounter hoping to improve their disappointing league campaign but struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities against a disciplined Birmingham defence.

The first half ended goalless, with Arsenal controlling much of the play but finding it difficult to penetrate the visitors' defensive structure. Birmingham remained organised at the back and looked dangerous whenever they had the opportunity to launch counter-attacks.

The visitors broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half when Oceane Hurtre finished a quick attacking move in the 53rd minute. The Birmingham forward drove up the pitch during a counter-attack before lifting the ball over Arsenal goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez to give her team the lead.

Arsenal responded by increasing the pressure on Birmingham as they searched for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Olivia Smith produced a moment of individual quality to restore parity.

The Arsenal attacker received the ball from Georgia Stanway before unleashing a superb long-range effort into the far corner, leaving the Birmingham defence unable to prevent the equaliser.

The hosts continued pushing for a winning goal, with Alessia Russo coming close to putting Arsenal ahead. The England international met Leah Williamson's corner with a header inside the penalty area, but her effort struck the far post.

Lisa Baum also threatened from close range with a header, only for Birmingham goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley to produce an important save to preserve the visitors' point. Despite Arsenal's late pressure, Birmingham held firm to secure a valuable draw at the Emirates Stadium.

The result leaves Arsenal eighth in the WSL table with six points from their opening six league matches, while Birmingham remain 11th as they continue their search for a first league victory since returning to the top flight.

Arsenal will next face Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Saturday, October 24, while Birmingham are scheduled to visit Durham in the Players Cup on Wednesday, October 21.
