Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has confirmed his intention to return to Argentine giants River Plate before bringing his professional football career to an end.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, 30 October 2026, the Argentina international has reiterated his desire to return to his former club despite only joining Manchester City during the summer transfer window.
Fernandez completed a €145 million move from Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium on Deadline Day, making him the most expensive signing in Premier League history.
The 25-year-old spent 15 years at River Plate before moving to Benfica in 2022 and eventually establishing himself in European football.
Despite signing a contract with Manchester City until 2031, the midfielder has made it clear that returning to his boyhood club remains an important personal ambition.
Speaking on Argentine programme Los Edul, as reported by Sport Witness, Fernandez said: "I want to return to River at some point, I’ve said it several times. I’m going to return, I’m sure of it. It’s something I really want. I stand by my words and what’s on record.
"If I say it, it’s because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did. Today, I’m here with a long contract at Manchester City. There’s still a long way to go, but it will happen."
Fernandez has made 10 appearances for Manchester City since arriving on September 1, scoring once. He was among three major midfield additions during the summer, alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
However, his comments do not suggest an immediate departure from the Premier League champions. With his contract running until 2031, Manchester City are expected to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, several other City players could leave the Etihad Stadium in 2027.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has attracted interest from Manchester United following limited opportunities, while Rico Lewis could also consider his future if his playing time does not improve. Mateo Kovacic is another player whose future remains uncertain.
