Liverpool staged a dramatic comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League, recovering from a first-half deficit in a match marked by injuries, VAR decisions and two red cards for the hosts. According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, the Reds showed resilience to claim all three points despite a difficult opening period.
Both sides created opportunities during the early stages, but Liverpool struggled to turn their attacking moves into clear goalscoring chances. Brentford gradually grew into the contest, with Igor Thiago and Jaidon Anthony causing problems for the visitors’ defence.
The hosts eventually took the lead in the 44th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter met Thiago’s cross with a powerful header from close range. The goal gave Brentford an advantage at the interval and left Liverpool facing the challenge of finding a response.
Liverpool’s difficulties were compounded by an injury to Dominik Szoboszlai, who had to leave the pitch before the break. The visitors also saw a penalty appeal overturned following a VAR review, denying them an opportunity to draw level before halftime.
However, the game took another dramatic turn during stoppage time when Yegor Yarmolyuk was shown a red card after the referee reviewed his challenge using VAR. Brentford were consequently forced to play the entire second half with ten men, giving Liverpool an opportunity to exploit their numerical advantage.
The visitors increased the pressure after the restart, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Brentford remained dangerous on the counterattack, though, and Alisson was required to make an important save to deny Jaidon Anthony.
Liverpool eventually found their breakthrough in the 62nd minute. Victor Munoz collected a pass from Florian Wirtz before producing an excellent finish into the bottom-left corner, bringing the visitors back into the contest.
The comeback was completed eight minutes later when Alexander Isak converted from close range. Bradley Barcola headed a cross into the striker’s path, allowing Isak to put Liverpool ahead for the first time and shift the pressure onto the home side.
Brentford continued searching for a late equaliser despite their numerical disadvantage. Liverpool, however, managed to withstand the pressure as the contest entered its closing stages.
Barcola came close to extending Liverpool’s lead but saw his effort strike the crossbar. Brentford’s task became even more difficult in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card, leaving the hosts with only nine players on the pitch.
Liverpool held on to secure an important away victory after overcoming a frustrating first half. Their ability to respond after falling behind demonstrated their determination, while Brentford were left to reflect on a promising performance that ultimately unravelled following two costly dismissals.
