According to a report by the Daily Mail on October 25, 2026, Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has been banned from playing against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after being sent off during the Blues’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
The England international was dismissed during Saturday’s London derby after receiving two yellow cards, leaving Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso facing questions about his team’s discipline following a frustrating performance against their rivals.
Palmer’s suspension will see him miss the encounter against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, but the midfielder is expected to be available for Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United next weekend.
The 2-0 defeat to Tottenham was a difficult afternoon for Chelsea, who struggled to produce their best football against a Spurs side that secured a memorable victory in west London.
Chelsea fell behind after goalkeeper Mike Penders suffered a disastrous moment, punching the ball into his own net to hand Tottenham the lead. Mathys Tel then scored an impressive solo goal five minutes before full-time to seal all three points for the visitors.
However, Palmer’s dismissal became one of the major talking points of the match.
The Chelsea playmaker was first booked after making contact with Mateus Fernandes following an incident in which the Tottenham midfielder was penalised for handball. Palmer was fortunate to avoid a straight red card for his reaction to the incident.
Approximately 10 minutes later, the 24-year-old received his second yellow card after catching Conor Gallagher with another challenge, forcing Chelsea to continue with 10 men.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville criticised Palmer’s actions, claiming that the attacking midfielder had lost his composure at a crucial moment in the game.
“ Cole Palmer has lost his head,” Neville said during his commentary for Sky Sports.
“To do that five minutes after the challenge on Fernandes is just silly.”
Neville also argued that Palmer should have shown greater maturity, considering his experience at the highest level of English football.
The suspension represents another setback for Alonso as he prepares his squad for a demanding run of fixtures. Chelsea will now have to face Liverpool without one of their most influential attacking players, potentially forcing the manager to make changes to his starting line-up.
Nevertheless, Palmer’s absence from the Carabao Cup tie could prove less damaging in the longer term because he is expected to return for the Premier League clash against Manchester United.
