According to a report by GOAL on Monday October 26, 2026, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged Xabi Alonso to give Estevao more playing time, warning that the talented Brazilian could eventually consider leaving Stamford Bridge if his situation does not improve.
Estevao enjoyed an impressive first season at Chelsea after joining from Palmeiras in the summer of 2025, recording eight goals and four assists before a serious hamstring injury interrupted his progress in April.
However, the 19-year-old has struggled to secure regular starts since Alonso took charge, with competition for places in Chelsea’s attack limiting his opportunities.
Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers have established themselves as important attacking options, leaving Estevao with limited chances to demonstrate his abilities from the start.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Obi Mikel acknowledged the difficulty of breaking into Chelsea’s forward line but insisted that the youngster deserves more opportunities.
“When you have a player who is so good, a brilliant player who has so much talent and ability, it’s hard to see him not getting playing time. He’s not getting much playing time at all,” the former Nigeria international said.
Obi Mikel believes Alonso can rotate his attacking options without disrupting the team’s chemistry, suggesting that Estevao could be introduced more regularly during the second half of matches.
He also pointed out that consistent minutes would help the Brazilian develop rhythm and confidence, particularly when injuries or suspensions create opportunities in the starting lineup.
The former Chelsea midfielder acknowledged that physicality and decision-making could be areas for improvement, but maintained that Estevao possesses the quality to become an important player for the club.
Obi Mikel is particularly concerned by reports suggesting that the teenager has become frustrated with his limited involvement, while Barcelona have reportedly been monitoring his situation.
“We have a young player, the last thing we want to see him do is to leave the football club,” he said.
He added that Estevao could contribute to Chelsea for many years if the club gives him the support and opportunities needed to fulfil his potential.
Obi Mikel also encouraged the youngster to work hard in training, demonstrate his personality and fight for his place rather than become discouraged by the competition around him.
There is no confirmation that Estevao has decided to leave Chelsea or that Barcelona have made a formal offer. Nevertheless, the reported interest highlights the importance of managing the youngster’s development carefully.
Chelsea will hope to respond positively after their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, with Alonso facing important decisions about his attacking lineup as the season continues.
