Unai Emery Faces Two Major Obstacles to Becoming Manchester United’s Next Manager

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Monday, November 2, 2026, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery continues to attract interest from Manchester United as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick. However, two significant issues could make it difficult for the Spaniard to take charge at Old Trafford.

Emery is widely respected across European football because of his impressive managerial achievements, having won five Europa League trophies with Sevilla, Villarreal and Aston Villa.

The Spanish tactician famously guided Villarreal to victory over Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final. After both teams played out a 1-1 draw, Villarreal eventually triumphed 11-10 in the penalty shootout against Solskjaer's side.

His managerial achievements also include winning the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain and leading Valencia to three consecutive third-place finishes in La Liga.

Since his appointment at Aston Villa in October 2022, Emery has significantly improved the club's fortunes, establishing them as a competitive force in European football before securing another Europa League title in May.

The 54-year-old's tactical intelligence, organisational ability and counterattacking philosophy have reportedly made him an attractive option for Manchester United's hierarchy as they consider their managerial future.

The Red Devils are currently experiencing a disappointing season, having managed only two victories in their first 13 matches across all competitions. Their latest setback was a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, which extended their winless run to nine consecutive games.

Martinez's dismissal further compounded United's problems, as the club slipped to 17th in the Premier League standings, leaving Carrick under considerable pressure.

Fabrizio Romano had previously reported that several important figures at Manchester United view Emery as a strong candidate for the managerial position. However, fresh information suggests that convincing him to move to Old Trafford would not be straightforward.

Dean Jones of Tribal Football identifies two major reasons why a potential appointment could prove difficult.

Firstly, Aston Villa are determined to protect their investment in Emery and have no intention of allowing him to leave easily. The manager remains under contract until 2029, and his agreement reportedly does not include an uncomplicated release clause.

Secondly, Emery is believed to have concerns about the way Manchester United are structured behind the scenes. He reportedly wants greater control over football-related decisions and fears that senior club executives could interfere with his responsibilities.

The Spaniard is also said to be unconvinced by the progress United have made, especially considering the significant amount of money they have spent on recruiting players.

Given these complications, the Red Devils could turn their attention to other managerial candidates, including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte, who may prove easier to attract.

According to Jones, Manchester United could make an important decision about Carrick's future during the November international break. The club may then attempt to appoint a successor before their crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
