According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday October 16, 2026, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is closing in on a new long-term contract that could make him one of the Premier League’s highest-paid players.
The Gunners are determined to secure the Norwegian midfielder’s future after his impressive performances at the start of the 2026/27 season.
The 27-year-old remains an important figure in Mikel Arteta’s plans, with the club reportedly very pleased with his recent contributions. Negotiations with his representatives are progressing positively, and neither party expects significant complications before an agreement is reached.
Odegaard’s current contract at the Emirates Stadium runs until the summer of 2028. However, Arsenal are keen to extend his stay rather than risk uncertainty surrounding his future in the coming years.
The midfielder joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2021, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent transfer worth approximately £30 million. Since then, he has established himself as a key player and leader within the squad.
Odegaard has made nearly 250 appearances for the Gunners, recording 46 goals and 46 assists across competitions. Despite persistent fitness problems during recent seasons, his quality and influence have remained important to the team's ambitions.
There had previously been speculation that Arsenal could consider selling the Norwegian to raise funds. However, those suggestions have reportedly been overtaken by his performances and renewed importance to the squad.
His impressive displays at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his position, while he has started the current campaign positively. Odegaard has already registered four goals in 10 appearances this season.
Arsenal are now prioritising a contract extension and are reportedly doing everything possible to reach an agreement. An announcement could arrive in the coming weeks if negotiations continue to progress smoothly.
The club’s determination to retain their captain reflects their desire to preserve the core of the squad that secured the league title last season. The move also follows Arteta’s own contract extension and forms part of Arsenal’s wider efforts to keep their most important players at the Emirates Stadium.
