According to a report by Sky Sports on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has named Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez as two players he would sell from the club’s current squad following controversial comments reportedly made by both footballers.
Scholes shared his opinion during an appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, hosted by Paddy McGuinness. During the discussion, the former Manchester United midfielder was asked how many players he would remove from the team, prompting him to identify Fernandes and Martinez as potential departures.
Fernandes was the first player Scholes mentioned after reports emerged that the Portuguese midfielder had questioned Michael Carrick’s tactical decisions following Manchester United’s heavy defeat to Como last week.
“Well, from what Bruno Fernandes did last week, I think that was unforgivable. So Bruno’s one,” Scholes said, expressing his displeasure with the midfielder’s reported actions.
The former England international also named Argentine defender Martinez after he reportedly made remarks concerning Manchester United’s leadership following their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Scholes questioned whether the defender should have involved himself in discussions about the club’s management.
Explaining his position, Scholes said, “I’m not saying it’s wrong what he said, but it’s not his business. That is nothing to do with you.”
Fernandes has faced increased scrutiny following the reported disagreement with Carrick. The midfielder was left on the bench during Manchester United’s Premier League encounter against Bournemouth on Sunday and did not make an appearance in the match.
United endured another disappointing afternoon at Old Trafford, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. The result extended their winless run across all competitions to eight matches, leaving them 16th in the Premier League table and just one point above the relegation zone.
The club’s poor performances have intensified pressure on Carrick, with reports indicating that Manchester United are exploring alternative managerial options should they decide to make a change.
Former United captain Gary Neville has also raised concerns about Carrick’s situation. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have reportedly been mentioned as possible candidates to replace him.
Manchester United will attempt to recover when they travel to face Chelsea on Saturday. The encounter could prove important for Carrick as he seeks to improve results and ease concerns about the team.
Scholes’ remarks have further fuelled discussions about discipline, leadership and accountability within the Manchester United dressing room during a challenging period for the club.
