According to a report by Metro on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has advised manager Michael Carrick to give teenage winger Shea Lacey a starting opportunity ahead of Amad Diallo following the club’s dramatic Champions League victory over AS Roma.

United recovered from a disappointing first-half performance, during which they fell two goals behind, to secure a remarkable 3-2 win at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The result ended their nine-match winless run and marked their first victory since September 10.

Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to begin the comeback before Matheus Cunha struck twice to complete the turnaround. However, Lacey also played an important role after entering the contest in the 75th minute.

The 19-year-old immediately brought energy and creativity to United’s right flank, troubling Roma’s defenders with his movement, accurate touches and impressive passing. His contribution proved particularly important when he supplied the assist for Cunha’s winning goal.

Lacey’s performance highlighted the attacking qualities United had been missing on that side, especially after Amad struggled to make a significant impact before being substituted.

The Ivory Coast international has also faced criticism for failing to convert important opportunities during United’s recent defeat against Chelsea. His last goal for the club came in December last year, while he has managed only two assists across all competitions during that period.

By contrast, Lacey has strengthened his case for more regular involvement. He previously announced himself with an impressive first senior goal against Brighton in the Carabao Cup in September.

Rooney believes the youngster’s effectiveness in attacking situations makes him a serious alternative to Amad, whose lack of decisive contributions remains a concern.

The former United captain explained that Lacey’s first touch removed the defender from the situation before he delivered an excellent pass to create the opportunity.
