According to a report by Metro on Wednesday November 4, 2026, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Matheus Cunha could finally find his best form at Old Trafford following his impressive performance in the club's 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma on Tuesday.
Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback against the Italian side after falling two goals behind at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to give Michael Carrick's men hope before Cunha scored twice late in the game to complete the comeback and secure all three points.
The victory was particularly important for United as it ended their nine-game winless run and provided a much-needed boost ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
Cunha had managed just two goals in all competitions before the Roma encounter, but Ferdinand believes his performance could represent a turning point in his Manchester United career.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former United defender suggested that the Brazilian could now build on the performance and become a consistent attacking threat for the club.
"I think for Cunha this could be liftoff where he starts to catch fire," Ferdinand said.
"I think he's a hugely talented footballer and he showed glimpses, especially last season.
"Could this be the game that unlocks him? Because I haven't seen it enough yet with him. You see moments, and you go, 'Oh, look at that, that's why we paid the big money for him', but not enough."
Ferdinand also praised Cunha's contribution beyond his two goals, particularly his work rate and determination when Manchester United were without possession.
He explained that the Brazilian's intensity and willingness to press opponents helped him deliver an impressive performance against Roma.
"Sometimes to generate a good performance, it isn't necessarily always going to be a bit of skill, or a goal, or a bit of that Brazilian samba," he added.
"Sometimes it's a bit of hard work and graft that the fans acknowledge and I thought Cunha yesterday was doing that."
Ferdinand acknowledged that Cunha's determination eventually led to him being sent off after chasing and harrying an opponent, describing the incident as a little immature.
However, he believes the forward should take encouragement from his overall performance and maintain the same intensity in future matches.
The former England international also urged Cunha to recognise how his hard work influenced the supporters and helped his teammates during the Roma encounter.
Meanwhile, Ferdinand also discussed Kobbie Mainoo's importance to Manchester United, insisting that the midfielder should become a central figure in Carrick's team.
He praised Mainoo's composure, ability to control possession and willingness to receive the ball in difficult areas.
Ferdinand also pointed out that United lost five matches while the midfielder was sidelined with injury, highlighting his importance to the team.
With Carlos Baleba reportedly facing a spell out with a hamstring injury, Ferdinand believes keeping Mainoo fit will be particularly important for United.
