According to a report by Football Transfer on Monday November 2, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly been monitoring Fulham defender Calvin Bassey for an extended period, according to a source close to the Nigerian international, as the club considers strengthening its defence.
The 26-year-old has recently attracted transfer attention, with United reportedly interested in securing his services in 2027. Approaching his prime years and nearing the end of his Fulham contract, Bassey could become an attractive option.
When Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023, he occasionally appeared uncomfortable and made costly mistakes. However, his performances have improved considerably, establishing him as a dependable centre-back with 47 international appearances for Nigeria.
United’s interest comes as they prepare to rebuild their defensive department in 2027. The club is expected to recruit at least one central defender, particularly with Lisandro Martinez reportedly set to leave.
However, signing Bassey may prove difficult. His current Fulham contract expires at the end of the season, but the London club can extend it for another year and reportedly want to offer him a fresh deal.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, a confidant of Bassey, reportedly connected with the Nigerian national team and federation, revealed that Manchester United’s interest dates back further than recent reports suggest.
“The interest in Bassey has been there since last season, when in my opinion he became one of the best defenders in the Premier League,” the source explained.
The insider praised Bassey’s physical strength, imposing presence and leadership qualities, highlighting his ability to captain Fulham during the current campaign.
The source added: “It is no surprise Manchester United want to sign him, and they are not the only team.”
However, Bassey has reportedly neither confirmed nor denied the speculation surrounding his future. The insider believes discussions could intensify after the season concludes, given the defender’s age and contractual situation.
A January transfer appears unlikely because Fulham possess the option to extend his agreement. Even if the club allowed his contract to run down, Manchester United would have to wait until May to negotiate a free transfer with him, unlike foreign clubs.
Fulham could therefore activate their extension clause to protect the defender’s value. If Bassey refuses to sign a new contract, the club might consider selling him after the season rather than risking his departure for nothing in 2028.
Manchester United have increasingly focused on recruiting players with proven Premier League experience during recent summer windows. Given Bassey’s performances and contractual circumstances, pursuing the Nigerian defender could represent a practical opportunity to strengthen their backline.
