MUN vs ROM: How Man Utd Could Line Up as Carrick Chases Victory In The UEFA Champions League

According to a report by the Evening Standard on Monday, November 2, 2026, Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is expected to make several selection decisions as his team prepare to face Roma in their UEFA Champions League encounter at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The Red Devils will be desperate to secure a positive result after enduring a disappointing run of form, which has increased the pressure on Carrick. United are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Senne Lammens retaining his position between the posts.

In defence, Leny Yoro could start at right-back despite his natural position being in central defence. The Frenchman has been used in that role as Manchester United continue to deal with their problems at left-back.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are expected to form the central defensive partnership, while Diogo Dalot could occupy the left-back position.

Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven are alternative defensive options available to Carrick, although the predicted selection suggests that Yoro and Dalot could get the nod. In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to return to the starting lineup after making his comeback from injury as a substitute against Chelsea at the weekend.

The England international could partner Youri Tielemans in the double pivot, with Carrick looking to establish stability in the middle of the pitch. Mainoo's return provides the manager with another option in midfield as United attempt to improve their performances against the Italian visitors.

Bruno Fernandes is expected to operate in the attacking midfield position after returning to the starting conversation following his appearance against Chelsea. The Portuguese international could be supported by Amad Diallo on the right wing and Matheus Cunha on the opposite flank.

Bryan Mbeumo is tipped to lead the attack in the absence of Benjamin Sesko, who continues his recovery from a shin injury. Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford are among the players expected to miss the encounter.

Predicted Manchester United starting XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Mainoo, Tielemans; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.
