According to a report by OwnGoalNigeria on Monday, November 2, 2026, The official social media accounts of the Super Eagles and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have been unfollowed by Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri, who is supposedly being monitored by coach Eric Chelle.
Some have speculated that the midfielder may decide to change his national team allegiance from England to Nigeria, so this news comes as no surprise.
After rumors circulated over the weekend that the 19-year-old attacking midfielder was contemplating a senior international debut for Nigeria, he began following the NFF and the Super Eagles on social media.
Super Eagles fans in Nigeria were ecstatic when he decided to follow both accounts, thinking it might mean he's open to the idea of changing his national team's allegiance.
New doubts regarding the midfielder's future with the national team were cast when he abruptly unfollowed both accounts, despite being owned by Arsenal.
Speculation that Nwaneri had consented to represent Nigeria has reportedly been denied by a source close to Eric Chelle.
He elaborated that the youngster was determined to make the most of his loan to Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga in order to boost his prospects of earning a starting role back at Arsenal.
Reports of an impending international switch may have been exaggerated, as the source also disclosed that the player had not been in touch with the team since the initial contact.
Although he was born in England to parents from Nigeria, Nwaneri has played for England at youth levels all the way up to the Under-21 squad.
But he hasn't played for England at the senior level yet, so he could play for Nigeria if he meets FIFA's requirements.
According to reports, Chelle has eyed the attacking midfielder as a possible addition to his team. He thinks the player could give Nigeria more options up front thanks to his versatility, technical skill, and inventiveness.
