According to a report by BBC SPORT on Monday November 2, 2026, Everton secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United after Thierno Barry scored shortly after half-time, while Jordan Pickford produced important saves to protect the visitors’ lead.
The result was sealed after a tense closing period, with Newcastle finishing the match with ten men following Jacob Ramsey’s dismissal.
The first half ended goalless despite opportunities at both ends. Newcastle threatened through Joelinton, who sent an effort narrowly wide, while Dan Burn also came close with a header from a corner. Everton created chances of their own, but Jake O’Brien failed to hit the target with a header and Harrison Armstrong also missed the opportunity to test the goalkeeper.
Newcastle continued to push after the break, but Everton found the breakthrough in the 49th minute. Tyrique George initially forced Lukas Hornicek into an excellent save with a close-range volley. The rebound fell kindly for Barry, who reacted quickly to turn the ball into the net and give the visitors the lead. VAR checked the goal before it was allowed to stand.
Everton then had further chances to extend their advantage. Hornicek denied Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with an impressive stop before producing another strong save to keep out O’Brien’s header. Newcastle also threatened, with Anthony Elanga striking the post in the 66th minute as the hosts searched for an equaliser.
Pickford became increasingly important as Newcastle raised the pressure. He comfortably stopped efforts from Yoane Wissa, while Ramsey came close with a dipping volley from outside the area. Newcastle made attacking changes but struggled to find a way past Everton’s organised defence.
The closing stages became increasingly tense. Ramsey received a second yellow card in stoppage time and was sent off, leaving Newcastle with ten players. Despite eight minutes of added time, Everton held on to claim all three points.
