Reggae Boys Football Club (RGBFC) secured a hard-fought victory over Cantonment Stars, with Emeka’s second-half header proving decisive in a closely contested encounter at the Millennial Cup 2026.
Both sides displayed attacking intent at the TA Lagbaja Military Cantonment Sports Complex, Maryland, Ikeja, but Reggae Boyz capitalised on a corner-kick opportunity to claim the victory.
Cantonment Stars started brightly, taking the initiative and putting the RGBFC defence under immediate pressure. They created two successive chances in the opening stages but failed to convert either opportunity.
RGBFC gradually settled into the contest, regained possession and began dictating the tempo. However, despite their improved control, they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the final third as both teams went into the break without scoring.
Their persistence eventually paid off through a corner kick, as Emeka rose above the opposition defenders to connect with a towering header and give his side the lead.
Despite the mounting pressure from Cantonment All Stars, Reggae Boyz maintained their defensive organisation to protect their advantage until the final whistle.
Speaking after the encounter, Emeka praised both teams for their performance, highlighting the quality and fitness displayed by the players despite the competition being organised for footballers aged 40 and above.
“It was a good game. You could see the fitness and quality both teams brought to the pitch. Although it was a competition for players aged 40 and above, there were men who clearly knew how to play football. I commend both teams for putting up a good performance,” he said.
In the third-place match, Liberty Stars FC defeated SAHCO FC 2-0, with captain Ebere scoring in both halves to secure the victory and help his side finish the competition on a positive note after their semi-final disappointment.
The President of Liberty Stars expressed his excitement following Liberty Stars’ third place finish, congratulating the team on their achievement. “I feel good, I feel excited. Congratulations to Liberty Stars on securing third position
The tournament also recognised outstanding individual performances, with Tony of Liberty Stars winning Best Goalkeeper, Godwin David emerging as Highest Goal Scorer, and Jerry Olaide claiming the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
