According to a report by Metro on Wednesday November 4, 2026, FC Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz has defended his team-mate Jesus Owono following the tragic death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel after an on-field collision during a Spanish second-division match.
De Miguel, 30, suffered severe head and chest injuries after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Owono during Monday's encounter between the two sides.
The incident happened in the closing stages of the match when Owono rushed out of his goal in an attempt to clear the ball. The goalkeeper was subsequently shown a red card following the collision.
De Miguel was immediately given medical attention before being taken to hospital, where his condition was initially described as stable but serious.
However, his condition later deteriorated, with Tenerife confirming his death on Tuesday morning.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with clubs, players and football organisations expressing their condolences to the striker's family and loved ones.
Meanwhile, Spatz has spoken in support of Owono, insisting that his goalkeeper and friend would never deliberately hurt another player.
The Andorra defender, who helped carry De Miguel off the pitch following the collision, also expressed his deepest condolences to the late striker's family, friends and Tenerife supporters.
"Those of us who know him know what kind of person he is, how much he is suffering at this moment, and that he would never intentionally hurt anyone," Spatz wrote in a message shared on Instagram.
He added that the entire Andorra squad had been left devastated by the incident, describing it as a tragedy nobody could have imagined experiencing on a football pitch.
"In football, accidents happen, but nobody could ever imagine that one of them could lead to such tragic consequences," he said.
Spatz also stressed that football was no longer important in the aftermath of the incident, urging everyone to stand together and support those affected by the loss.
Owono, 25, has reportedly been experiencing profound distress and anguish following De Miguel's death and is yet to make a public statement about the incident.
The Equatorial Guinean goalkeeper has also received support from the president of his country's football federation.
Meanwhile, Spanish police have reportedly launched an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the striker's death. However, Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui indicated that criminal proceedings against Owono were very unlikely.
The Spanish Football Federation also postponed Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches scheduled for Tuesday as a mark of respect for the late footballer.
Tenerife's upcoming Segunda Division fixture against Granada has also been postponed, while Andorra have requested the postponement of their next match against Mallorca.
FC Andorra have confirmed that they are providing psychological support to players and staff affected by the tragedy.
The club also expressed its condolences to De Miguel's family and the Tenerife community, insisting that the football world must remain united during this difficult period.
